Colne Town Centre

The specification for the Colne Town Centre project, commissioned by Lancashire County Council, required us to perform a detailed Topographical Survey of the town centre’s one-way system. The purpose of this survey was to assess the feasibility of converting the current one-way system back into a two-way traffic flow, a significant consideration for improving traffic management and accessibility in the area.

To execute this task, we utilised a Leica Total Station, renowned for its precision and reliability in surveying applications. Our team meticulously surveyed the roads and markings, ensuring all relevant features were accurately captured. This involved recording the exact positions and dimensions of roadways and other infrastructural elements critical to understanding the existing traffic system’s layout.

To enhance the accuracy and comprehensiveness of our survey, we integrated data from a previous survey conducted on Colne Market. This historical data provided additional context and detail, allowing for a more thorough analysis of the town centre’s traffic system. By combining new and existing data, we ensured a richer, more informed survey output.

Moreover, we implemented a denser grid level during the survey process. This approach involved taking measurements at more frequent intervals than standard surveys, resulting in a highly detailed map of the area. The increased density of data points allowed for a finer resolution of the town centre’s topography, capturing subtle variations in the road surface and other features that could impact the feasibility study.
